Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2003, the Sanctuary of Oropa is situated less than 15 kilometres from the city of Biella in the heart of a large natural park. It was founded by Saint Eusebius in 13th century and is dedicated to the Black Madonna. This black wooden statue of the Virgin Mary, which is kept  in the Ancient Basilica, is quite mysterious: the wood hasn’t been damaged over time; her foot hasn’t worn out, despite the great number of believers touching it; and when the Dean cleans the statue every November, her face and the baby are never covered with dust. The Upper Basilica was consecrated in 1960 and has an impressive 81m dome.
