Subiaco Monastery

St. Benedict chose to live alone in a cave (the Sacro Speco) for three years, sustained only by scraps of food lowered in a basket by the hermit monk Romanus. Located a few kilometers from the monastery of St. Scholastica, amid spectacular natural scenery, the Monastery of St. Benedict  in Subiaco enshrines this cave  in which the saint lived as a hermit before he organized his first monastic community. The architecture is very interesting with the beautiful chapels built around natural caves, the wonderful mosaics and  two churches.
