In 1551 St Philip Neri founded the Confraternity of Pilgrims and Convalescents in order to offer help and assistance to the many pilgrims who came to Rome. Pope Gregory XIII gave him as a gift the Church of Santa Maria in Vallicella that, thanks to the initiative of the Saint, was completely reconstructed. For this reason it assumed the name of the New Church. The interior of this church is a real Baroque joy. A small chapel houses the sacred remains of St Philip Neri, who also invented the Pilgrimage of the 7 churches.
